Mica Band Heaters

Mica Band Heaters

A mica band heater is made of an electrical resistance ribbon or wire, which is wound around a mica winding card and sandwiched between two sheets of mica, then wrapped in sheet metal. The resistance wire or ribbon that converts electrical energy to thermal energy is normally a nickel-chromium alloy of either 80% nickel which is useful to 1,100°C or 60% nickel which is useful to 950°C. The mica is, most often, one of the three types: muscovite, useful to 500°C. phlogopite, useful to 750°C, and synthetic mica, useful to 900°C. The sheet metal is normally either mild steel, Stainless steel, brass, Gl depending on the temp and the product to be heated. The maximum temp for a mica band heater is 400°C.

Construction :

  1. SS/GI Sheath for good thermal conductivity and oxidation/ corrosion resistance at elevated temperatures.
  2. Mica Insulation provides excellent electrical insulation and resistant to moisture.
  3. Clamping band designed to maintain clamping pressure and firm contact with the cylinder surface thus eliminating air gaps at the contact
  4. Nickel-Chromium resistance strip evenly wound for uniform heat distribution and reliable accuracy
  5. Terminal Box to provide protection against exposed terminals and helps guard terminals from spill over’s, dripping
  6.  Lead Protection is available where abrasion is a problem
  7. Stainless Steel screw terminals for maximum amperage carrying capacity and a firm connection with the winding
